Types

Body jewelry used for body piercing is based on a straight line, a type of barbell or a circle. Several people choose what is aesthetically appealing. The most common kind of ring jewelry worn is a captured bead ring, where the jewelry wire is bent nearly into a circle, and the two ends squeezed into an aptly-sized bead, holding it into place.

The curved barbell is capped with two beaded ends. It’s less of a circle than the captured bead ring and has free ends, one with a fixed close and one threaded for jewelry removal. Differences of curved barbells have been in use long enough to have their own names, including banana bar or an L-bar.

Jewelry Quality (and other things to know)

  • The surfaces and ends of body jewelry must be free of nicks, scratches, burrs, and polishing compounds. Suitable pieces have no irregular surfaces that could endanger the delicate healing tissue of a fresh piercing. Metal body jewelry should be polished to a smooth, mirror finish. If you wear jewelry that has a porous or uneven surface, the new cells that form during healing grow into the irregularities. Then, when the jewelry shifts or moves, these areas tear. As this cycle is repeated, scar tissue forms and healing is delayed. A faulty finish can also introduce bacteria into the wound and cause infection.
  • Quality rings are annealed, which is a heat treatment that makes the metal more pliable. When rings can be opened or closed without the use of pliers it reduces the risk of damaging the metal. For thicker rings (especially in smaller diameters) the use of tools may be necessary. Tools should have brass jaws or be covered with tape or gauze to protect the jewelry from damage.

Agate Story (english)

WHAT IS AN AGATE?

Agates are semi-precious gemstones that are a variegated form of chalcedony (pronounced kal-sed’-nee), which is silicon dioxide in the form of microscopic fibrous quartz crystals. Agates naturally develop when an empty pocket inside a host rock fills in molecule-by-molecule, layer-by-layer as these microcrystals self organize to form concentric bands or other patterns. The colors and arrangement of the microcrystals are influenced by changes in pressure, temperature, and mineral content that occur during the formation process. Unlike other gemstones, each agate is unique. Even slabs cut from the same specimen will vary in color and design.

HOW DO AGATES FORM?

Agates develop as secondary deposits in hollow cavities, called vesicles. Although they can form in all types of host rock, most of the world’s agates developed in ancient volcanic lava. When the continents were first forming, layers of molten lava pushed toward the earth’s surface through rift zone cracks, volcanoes, and other geologic events. Within the lava, there were pockets of trapped gases. Later, these gases escaped through cracks that formed as the igneous rock cooled and hardened, leaving hollow cavities. Other cracks and seams also formed when adjoining sections of lava cooled at different rates.

Agate Microcrystal Formation

These empty cavities and seams filled with fluids rich in dissolved and suspended quartz molecules (silica), as well as other mineral impurities. When the silica concentration became supersaturated, it developed a gelatin-like consistency either throughout the pocket or in a layer that served as the active crystallization front. Over time, the silica molecules began to form miniature fibrous microcrystals that attached to the sides of the cavity or seam. During the filling-in process other mineral impurities collected at the inside of the chalcedony silica band, forming intervening and often contrasting bands. This pattern repeated until the entire vesicle was filled in, or until all the silica rich solution was used up. If there was the proper balance of silica and mineral impurities, then the entire cavity filled with alternating bands. If there was an insufficient quantity of mineral impurity or if the pressures and temperatures changed, the cavity completed filling in with macrocrystalline quartz, or another form of silica.

Body Jewelry History

Body jewelry is used in body piercing, and the most common piercings are seen in the ears, nose and belly button.
The ear lobes are the most basic place for a piercing, as it is soft and probably the least painful. Other areas that can be pierced include eyebrows, lip, cheek tongue, genitals, belly button and nipples

History

  • Earrings, probably the most popular body jewelry, are thought to have come from western Asia around 3000 BC. Everyday use of earrings has been recorded on coins, vase illustrations and terra-cotta figurines.

In the 1930s, earrings were transformed with the clip-on invention. This fastened earrings tighter than screw-ons. As a result, clip-ons became trendier for several decades.

Becoming light and slick, earring design developed more in the 1950s, when they began to move. And in the 1960s, earrings were starting to be worn for fun or as symbols of freedom to express ones self.

Another popular body jewelry piece, the navel ring, has been around since the time of the Aztecs. They were also common among the Incas, Egyptians and other ancient tribes. Navel piercings indicated one’s status, courage in battle or a spiritual connection with gods.

Warning

Common issues that could occur include infection where the piercing is; this risk is increased more with other health risks. Infections can possibly be critical, life-threatening and include your entire body.

Another risk is tearing the skin, which can create scar tissue. Other problems can come from the kind of body jewelry used, including allergies to metals. Therefore, you should only use hypoallergenic jewelry, and for new piercings, use stainless steel, gold, platinum, niobium and titanium. Also, be sure to use a sterile method; if you don’t there is a likelihood of spreading potentially life-threatening diseases.

Body Jewelry Function

Reasons for getting body jewelry vary as much as the individuals who get them. Some think body jewelry is attractive in its own way. Other people use it to make a statement or to express themselves; others use it to show their attitude toward a conservative society. Still others use it to designate membership in certain groups or to commemorate a special moment in life.
